Is the Nutrition Science & Dietetics program accredited?
Yes. The Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics at Andrews University is a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). This accreditation ensures that the program meets the national standards required to prepare students for the next steps in becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), including graduate-level supervised practice and eligibility for the RDN exam.
What career opportunities are available with a BS in Nutrition Science & Dietetics?
Graduates of the BS in Nutrition Science & Dietetics program can pursue careers in clinical nutrition, community and public health, wellness coaching, food service management, health education, sports nutrition, and corporate wellness. The degree also provides a strong foundation for graduate programs in dietetics, public health, medicine, or lifestyle medicine. With rising interest in plant-based nutrition, chronic disease prevention, and sustainable health practices, demand for qualified nutrition professionals is growing in both traditional and emerging fields.
What’s the difference between this program and becoming a Registered Dietitian?
The BS in Nutrition Science & Dietetics is an undergraduate degree that equips students with the scientific knowledge and foundational coursework needed for advanced study in dietetics. To become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), students must complete a graduate-level degree and an accredited supervised practice program, then pass the national RDN exam. This degree fulfills many of the prerequisites required to apply for such programs.
What kind of hands-on experience will I gain during the program?
Students participate in a variety of hands-on learning experiences, including community nutrition outreach, cooking demonstrations, food science labs, patient simulations, lifestyle medicine programs and research projects. The program emphasizes practical application of nutrition principles and includes opportunities for service learning, faith-integrated wellness education, and student-led health initiatives on campus and in the surrounding community.
Can I specialize or tailor my coursework based on my career interests?
Yes! Students can tailor their academic journey by selecting electives or research projects that align with their interests in areas such as plant-based nutrition, sports nutrition, global health, diabetes education, or community wellness. Faculty mentorship helps students develop individualized goals and prepare for career pathways or graduate school.
What are the admissions requirements for the program?
Students apply to the DPD program in their junior year. A 3.0 GPA is required for admission and graduation. Prerequisites s include courses in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry, math, sociology, and psychology. An internal program application is also required.
How long does it take to complete the BS in Nutrition Science & Dietetics?
The full program typically takes four years to complete, including general education, prerequisites, and core nutrition courses. The DPD-specific coursework is designed to be completed over two years (junior and senior year), once prerequisite requirements are met.
Are scholarships or financial aid available for nutrition students?
